22578VIC Course in the Management of Asthma Risks and Emergencies in the Workplace

Application and Relevance
This course applies to a wide range of settings where emergencies involving asthma episodes may occur. It is relevant for teachers, childcare workers, aged-care workers, disability workers, sports coaches, youth workers and designated workplace first aiders.

Duration
2-3 hours classroom training and assessment with online pre-work; or 3-4 hours total face-to-face training and assessment.

Course Content
This course provides the skills and knowledge to be able to develop an asthma management plan and provide asthma-related first aid interventions in the workplace. It includes:

Background knowledge of the triggers, symptoms and effects of asthma
+Risk minimisation and management strategies for asthma emergencies
+Emergency treatment for an asthma episode
+Communicating details of emergency asthma incidents
+Evaluating responses to asthma emergencies

Prerequisites
There are no prerequisite units for this course, though participants should have numeracy and literacy skills equivalent to level 2 of the National Reporting System. An example of a NRS level 2 activity is requesting appropriate emergency assistance at the scene of an emergency asthma attack incident.

Assessment Methods
Progressive assessment throughout the course, including demonstration of practical skills and written and oral questions relating to underpinning knowledge.

Award Issued
A nationally-recognised Statement of Attainment will be issued to all successful participants.
