HLTAID014 Provide Advanced First Aid

Application and Relevance
This course provides a set of skills to provide an advanced first aid response in the event of an emergency. It is relevant for personnel who are the designated first aiders, particularly those working in manufacturing, construction, mining or any occupation involving hazardous work.

Duration
2 days (16 hours) classroom/workplace training and assessment OR 1 day (8 hours) classroom/workplace training and assessment with workbook theory learning completed prior.

Course Content
This course covers the provision of advanced first aid response, management of the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival of medical assistance. Topics include:

+ Legislative requirements in First Aid
+ Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation
+ Bag-valve-mask ventilation
+ Safe use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
+ First Aid for bleeding, fractures and other trauma
+ First Aid for a casualty suffering Crush Injuries
+ First Aid for casualties suffering from extremes of temperature
+ First Aid for minor wounds & infection control procedures
+ Coordinating first aid activities
+ Conducting a secondary survey casualty assessment
+ Assessing vital signs
+ Triage of multiple casualties
+ Debriefing and evaluation of response to critical incidents
+ Providing an accurate verbal and written report of the incident + Review of contingency planning

Prerequisites
There are no prerequisite units, however it is recommended that participants have some prior experience of providing first aid and have previously attained HLTAID011 Provide First Aid. Participants should have numeracy and literacy skills equivalent to level 2 of the National Reporting System. They should also have the physical ability to meet the demands of the practical skills including CPR.

Assessment Methods
Progressive assessment throughout the course, including demonstration of practical skills and written and oral questions relating to underpinning knowledge. Note that the provision of CPR must be demonstrated on the floor.

Award Issued
A nationally-recognised Statement of Attainment will be issued to all successful participants.

HLTAID015 Provide Advanced Resuscitation

Application and Relevance
This course applies to a range of industries where first aiders need to be trained in the use of specialised equipment in the provision of resuscitation, including defibrillators, medical oxygen and advanced airway management devices. It is relevant for designated first aiders, especially those working in manufacturing, construction, mining or any occupation involving remote or hazardous work.

Duration
4-5 hours. Total face-to-face training and assessment.

Course Content
This course deals with the skills and knowledge to understand the safety requirements when handling an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), the skills to use an AED within the first minutes after a cardiac arrest, as well as skills and knowledge to safely perform oxygen therapy and resuscitation in the workplace. It includes:

The importance of Defibrillation
+  Safety procedures when using AEDs
+  Administering automated external defibrillation
+  Use of oropharyngeal airway devices
+  Benefits of oxygen administration
+  Safe procedures when using medical oxygen equipment
+  Administering oxygen therapy to a spontaneously breathing patient
+  Resuscitation of a non-breathing casualty using ventilation, soft bag and mask and manually triggered oxygen powered devices

Prerequisites
There are no prerequisite units for this course, though it is recommended that participants have language and literacy skills equivalent to level 3 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).

The course takes into account the hazards and likely injuries for the particular industry. Each participant will be provided with all of the intellectual materials required to study all modules. Each program will also be supported with adequate Teaching Aids to assist with the theory and practical training modules such as CPR manikins, Bandages, Visual Aids, Handouts etc as appropriate.
